Five time gold medallist from California visits North City

The region’s future Olympic hopefuls were treated to an early Christmas present this morning thanks to a visit from Aaron Peirsol to North City Family and Fitness Centre.

The five time gold medallist from California, who currently holds the world record for the one hundred and two hundred meters back stoke, braved the heavy snow in Manchester to host a swimming clinic for the local community.

Sixty enthusiastic young swimmers, aged between eight and sixteen, were chosen to attend the clinic by the ASA North West and the City of Manchester Swimming. They were treated to a rare and valuable insight into the sport by the Olympian who stands at the top echelon of the sport.

Fresh from representing the United States against a European select team at the ‘Duel in the Pool’ event, held at the Manchester Aquatics Centre earlier this weekend, Aaron took time out of his hectic schedule to host the clinic.

He discussed his career at length with the young hopefuls before jumping in the pool with them to share some of his top training tips. “It was inspirational to hear Aaron talk about his experiences,” said Alice Bailey from Satellites Swimming Club in Macclesfield. “It makes you realise that you too could make the Olympics if you are dedicated.”

It’s not just the youngsters who benefited from the day either. “I love doing clinics like this” said Aaron. “Its great inspiring the youth and it gives me the opportunity to give something back to the swimming community that has given me so much.”

The enthusiasm with which the day was received by all of those who attended today points to a bright future for grass roots swimming in Britain in the run up to 2012 and beyond.
